Jazmine’s mother and father love all three of their beautiful daughters but Jazmine holds a special place in their hearts.  Her mother says now, “I feel like a little girl with a new doll…”

Prevent Alzheimer’s? No evidence you can: panel

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Fish oil, exercise and doing puzzles may all be good for the brain but there is no strong evidence that any of these can prevent Alzheimer’s disease, an expert panel concluded on Wednesday.

Nor can any other supplements, drugs or social interaction, the independent panel meeting at the National Institutes of Health outside Washington concluded.

The group of experts looked at the dozens of studies that have suggested ways to prevent Alzheimer’s — a devastating and incurable breakdown of the brain — and found none were strong enough to constitute proof.

“We wish we could tell people that taking a pill or doing a puzzle every day would prevent this terrible disease, but current evidence doesn’t support this,” said Dr. Martha Daviglus of Northwestern University in Chicago, who chaired the panel.

Most of the studies that have been done show associations, but not cause and effect, Daviglus said.

“These associations are examples of the classic chicken or the egg quandary. Are people able to stay mentally sharp over time because they are physically active and socially engaged or are they simply more likely to stay physically active and socially engaged because they are mentally sharp?” she asked.

The 15 experts met under the NIH’s state-of-the-science conference program, which aims to direct future research in an important study area.

They included specialists in geriatrics, long-term care, nursing, psychiatry and other fields. Panelists may not be federal government employees, nor may they have financial stakes in any treatments considered.

DISEASE NOT FULLY UNDERSTOOD

The Alzheimer’s Association says as many as 5.3 million Americans have Alzheimer’s and projects that 16 million may have it by 2050.

“It is critical that we, as a nation, significantly increase investments in Alzheimer research,” the group said in a statement.

“The total payments for health and long-term care services for people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias will amount to $172 billion from all sources in 2010.”

The panel found there were inconsistent definitions of what constitutes Alzheimer’s disease and the cognitive decline that leads up to it.

Doctors also do not fully understand how the disease develops — for instance, there is disagreement on whether the amyloid plaques found in the brains of victims cause the disease or are merely a symptom.

There are a few drugs to treat Alzheimer’s but their effects are temporary. Genetics are strongly involved, and blacks and other minorities have a higher risk than whites.

FDA Announces Phase Out of CFC-Based Asthma and COPD Inhalers

April 16, 2010 — In compliance with a rule about ozone-depleting substances, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that 7 available asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) metered-dose inhalers that use chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) as propellants are being removed from the marketplace.

The phase out is to comply with the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. Alternative medications that contain hydrofluoroalkanes are available to substitute for the CFC-based products.

Affected Products

The affected products and their phase-out dates are as follows:

• nedocromil (Tilade Inhaler, King Pharmaceuticals), June 14, 2010
• metaproterenol (Alupent Inhalation Aerosol, Boehringer Ingelheim), June 14, 2010

According to the FDA press release, the United States has banned the general use of CFCs in consumer aerosols for decades and eliminated the production of CFCs in the United States as of January 1, 1996, except for certain limited uses, such as metered-dose inhalers.

“Like most countries, the US signed this agreement and committed to making it illegal to make or sell CFC-containing substances after a certain date,” said Erica V. Jefferson, a spokesperson with the FDA Office of Public Affairs in a conversation with Medscape Medical News. “Most CFC inhalers have already been phased out as part of this agreement,” she added.

According to Ms. Jefferson, there are no special monitoring programs, and there will be no penalties for prescribers. “However, [the] FDA has been working with manufacturers, healthcare professionals, and patient groups to notify them that these CFC-containing products will no longer be available for sale or distribution after the transition dates,” she told Medscape Medical News.

Many companies that make CFC inhalers have already stopped manufacturing some of the products on the transition list. These include Tilade, Alupent, Azmacort, and Intal. The remaining 3 products (Aerobid, Maxair, and Combivent) being transitioned between 2011 and 2013 are still available, but the amount of inventory remaining is unknown, Ms. Jefferson explained.

Available Alternatives

“Physicians should work with their patients to determine which alternative product or products will work best for their patients in terms of managing their disease, and which will work for their patients’ lifestyle,” Ms. Jefferson said.

Bradley E. Chipps, MD, from the Capital Allergy & Respiratory Disease Center and a fellow of the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology, said that this phase out will not significantly change clinical practice for practicing pulmonary specialists. However, he added, patients are less likely to be adherent because of higher costs for CFC-free products. “Importantly, [hydrofluoroalkane] inhalers can become ’stuffed up,’ whereas the CFC inhalers did not have this problem,” he told Medscape Medical News.

INFLUENZA VACCINE

Researchers in Texas Launch Autism Study Using Protein Supplement

DALLAS, November 22, 2006— Scientists at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and Immunotec Research Ltd. have initiated a study in which a specially formulated whey protein isolate (Immunocal)will be used to raise glutathione levels in an attempt to lessen symptoms of autism.

Autism is a neurological developmental disorder that affects children’s ability to socialize normally, impairs language skills, restricts their interests and curiosity and causes other behavioral abnormalities. Most cases are diagnosed before three years of age, and there has been an alarming increase in the number of cases diagnosed over the past two decades. Currently, 1 in every 175 American children is being identified as having autism, and these numbers are on the rise each year. To date, medical treatment of this disorder has been minimally effective. Although the causes of autism have not been clearly identified, research has suggested that chronic biochemical imbalance plays a role. Studies have shown that levels of the major intracellular antioxidant “Glutathione” is typically about 50% lower in children with autism. Glutathione, which is produced by every cell in the body, is responsible for a number of functions including removing or neutralizing dangerous substances that we are exposed to on a daily basis, including toxic metals.

Toxins, pollution, disease, stress, and poor diet can all contribute to loss of glutathione. When glutathione levels reach a critically low degree, we are much more vulnerable to toxins and immune dysfunction.

Principal investigator for this study is Dr. Janet Kern, an adjunct assistant professor of psychiatry at UT Southwestern, which is internationally recognized for its clinical and research programs.

“Some children with autism are poor detoxifiers relative to normally developing children, and in particular, have trouble excreting toxic metals,” said Dr. Kern. “Toxic metals that are not eliminated may build up in the brain. Plasma glutathione has been found to be lower in children with autism, particularly, in children with autism who have regressed. We want to clearly establish that raising glutathione levels in these children will improve their ability to detoxify these substances and in that way improve some of their symptoms.”

Dr. Jill James, Professor of Pediatrics at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, will be a coinvestigator. Dr. James is noted for her landmark studies in autism and toxicology and is among the first scientists to point out the links with low glutathione levels. “We know that Immunocal has been used to raise glutathione in other studies very effectively in areas such as cancer and lung disease. Allergies and Lung Protection

The risk of developing respiratory allergies from exposure to diesel emissions depends largely on genetics, according to a study funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Researchers from the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California and the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA have found that genetic characteristics seen in about half the population leave allergy-sufferers particularly susceptible to the effects of diesel particles.

Here are the relevant findings from the study:

• People with a certain genetic makeup are more susceptible to allergies caused by diesel engine exhaust.

• Antioxidants can detoxify these particles and temper the body’s allergic inflammatory response. The better the body can use antioxidants to defend itself, the better it may protect itself from airborne pollutants.

• The enzymes glutathione S-transferase M1, or GSTM1, and glutathione S-transferase P1, or GSTP1 - that metabolize reactive oxygen species and detoxify chemicals present in diesel exhaust - were studied for their role in protecting the lungs.

• GSTM1 occurs in two common forms in the population-either “present” or “null.” People born with two of the null form of the gene cannot produce the GSTM1 protective enzyme at all.

• The GSTP1 gene can occur with a common variation called ile105. People born with two of the ile105 form of the gene produce a less-effective form of the GSTP1 enzyme.

• People who lack the GSTM1 enzyme exhibit a larger allergic response than others. Also, those who lack GSTM1 and have at least one GSTP1 ile105 genetic variant show an even larger allergic response to diesel exhaust particles.

• The findings suggest that people who lack the genes to make key antioxidants may have difficulty fighting the harmful effects of air pollution.

• Up to 50 percent of the United States population could be in jeopardy of experiencing health problems related to air pollution because of these genetic variations.

• Overcoming this genetic deficiency could possibly be accomplished by either giving people drugs that replace the role of the genes or by boosting the body’s natural defenses.

• Antioxidants may prevent the effects that air pollution have on allergic inflammation.

The research suggest that boosting levels of antioxidants like glutathione, may prevent the effects that air pollution have on allergic inflammation.

The best way to increase and maintain one’s glutathione (GSH) levels is to include animal foods in your diet, as these contain the amino acids needed by the body to synthesize GSH.

In 1997, I was diagnosed with a very aggressive, Pulmonary disease [called] “stage 3 Sarcoidosis.” This is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and scaring of the lung tissue. I was already losing vital lung function and in time I would become a lung cripple, no longer able to breathe without the aid of an oxygen tank.

My doctors recommended that I began a lifelong immuno-suppressive therapy-using Steroids. I was further in formed that the benefits from the steroid treatment could not be guaranteed but the long-term prognosis without the treatment is probably worse.

In June of 1999 I started using a high dose of Prednisone. The drug Plaquenil was later added. Modest improvement came at the expense of many side effects including abnormal weight gain, muscular weakness, a [bloated] look in my face, pain in my joints and the swelling of my fingers. Since immuno-suppressive therapy did not provide me with the results I was looking for, I discontinued the treatment in April 2001. I then started looking for a nutritional solution to support my immune system.

In addition to juicing, I made some major changes in my eating habits. In October 2001, I started taking Chinese herbs to further support my immune system. The Doctors began to see some major clinical improvements. Some weeks latter an old friend by the name of Jim Spencer contacted me and recommended that I start taking a product called Immunocal. Hypothyroid Disease Testimonial January 2009

My name is Greta Flippen. I operate a hair salon in Port St. Lucie , Florida . I have had various health challenges over the years, including hypothyroid disease, Fibromyalgia, and petite mal epilepsy.

I experienced generalized seizures, low serotonin levels, and lack of focus from the epilepsy. Professional cheerleader contracts dystonia from a routine flu vaccine… Fox news reports:

I am 48 years old today, but in my early 20’s I was warned, more than once that my test results showed “Very High Cholesterol”. (Health challenge 1)

In 1996 at the age of 35, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. I sought out a second and third opinion only to get the same diagnosis (RA). The doctors though could not give me any answers to some of my test results or why I was having many unexplained symptoms that did not relate to RA such has a breakout of redness on the bridge on my nose or the burning sensation that ran through my body (inflammation), tiredness when in the sun and more. (By the way, I had no joint pain, the doctors just said you will get it later).

Then at the age of 36 in 1997, I went to see a cardiologist specialist for chest pains and rapid heartbeat. I was diagnosed with Tachycardia (Health challenge 2), the recommendation was to have an operation (I was pregnant so I refused). The results were not in my favor. That year I was diagnosed with a sister to Lupus (Health challenge 3).

Dr. Neuwalt wanted me take prednisone and other meds, but (still pregnant and not wanting to harm my unborn child, I also refused all these medications). I continued to have intermittent flare ups and was sicker than I would let others know about.

(My Turning Point)
In 2005, a good friend of 28 years in Tennessee called me to tell me about Immunocal and how it had helped her husband who had an Aneurysm. Of course I was happy for him, but not interested in hearing about any products. She was so thrilled and just wanted to share the news, but she did not know about my conditions or what was going on when she called. I had numbness on the right side of my face and drooling from both sides of my mouth and a very bad dark brown infection under the nail beds of both of my big toes. My daughter, Virginia, started to develop Exercise Induced Asthma at around age 11. She was put on Salbutamol Inhalers. Her asthma got progressively worse to the point where she was using a steroid inhaler as well.

It got to the point where she would develop Bronchitis every time she caught a sniffle. These bouts with Bronchitis then started to develop into Pneumonia.

Virginia is an athlete. She was on all the school teams, basketball, volleyball, baseball, x-country running, you name it. She also played the trombone in both the school’s senior band and in jazz band.
Her Asthma now started to seriously interfere with her various activities and enjoyment of life.

It got worse the day we found her, passed out on the floor, beside a fully drawn bathtub… She was unconscious, with her lips starting to turn blue.
After some time in the hospital, a specialist told us to get rid of all animals, move out of our century farm house, not to go outside near ..trees! grass! etc. It was absurd.

He then gave me a standing prescription for Prednisone. I was told to give her 8 pills, 5mg each, at the onset of any cold. That’s 40 mg of Prednisone for every cold, for a duration of 10 days. I was absolutely horrified.
